Summary, etc |
This practical book introduces strategic management for leaders and senior managers in schools and shows how it can contribute to school development. Following the introductory chapter, chapter 2 discusses the concept of strategy and the conceptual stages of developing strategy--analysis, choice, and implementation. Chapter 3 examines the relationship between leadership and strategy. Chapter 4 gives major consideration to the ways school staff members can work together and the differences between consultation and participation. Chapter 5 examines school improvement and the issues of how to determine what to improve and how to go about improvement. Chapter 6 brings together the three conceptual stages of strategic management and the three operational stages in a strategic planning model for schools. Chapters 7 to 9 consider, in turn, the processes of strategic analysis, strategic vision and choice, and strategic implementation and monitoring. A brief concluding chapter invites schools to begin to plan more strategically, starting with suggesting realistic expectations of the outcome from a first strategic plan. A large number of activities are included, designed to facilitate staff discussion of strategic analysis and strategic choice, plus a list of sources for further reading. (Contains 51 references.)
