This book is a welcome addition to the somewhat sparse literature on Bhutan's
development. It roots Bhutan's economic development in a historical context, and
also juxtaposes it against the unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness. It
poses some fascinating questions, for example whether the Gross National
Happiness approach has helped address some of the complexities and challenges
posed by modern economic growth. And are there other lessons from Bhutan's
development for small, land-locked countries, that may also happen to be mountainous ?
