Chemistry is a neglected part of the primary science curriculum. The author of this chapter argues that children's inherent enthusiasm for this topic should be made better use of. Case studies are given to show teachers the possibilities in this area. Primary teachers can lay a foundation for positive attitudes towards chemistry and the establishment of scientifically accepted chemical ideas by being aware of the alternative conceptions many primary school students and adults hold about chemical phenomena, such as burning and rusting, and taking action to challenge these ideas.
