This book offers a practical introduction to discourse analysis and its relevance for language teaching. It begins with explaining what discourse analysis is, then outlines different models of analysis and evaluates them in terms of their usefulness to language teachers. This is followed by chapters dealing with new ways of looking at grammar, vocabulary and phonology in the light of discourse analysis. The final section of the book concentrates on spoken and written language with examples from a native-speaker and learner data. It also considers some teaching approaches based on the insights of discourse analysis.
